Storage and Packing Tips
Plan and Prepare
Prepare your space by placing a protective cover on the floor under your storage items.
Place storage items on boards or pallets to guard against dampness. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp. Leave a small space between the walls and boxes to allow for air circulation.
Make up an inventory list of your items and keep in a safe place away from the storage unit.
Do not store PERISHABLE items (food, pet food, etc.).
Do not store COMBUSTIBLE items (gasoline, paint thinner, solvents).
Try to leave an aisle down the center of the storage unit for easier access.
Totes and Cardboard boxes
If possible, plastic totes or bins are recommended for storing your items. Tight sealing lids will help keep out moisture and dust, and are much stronger for stacking purposes.
Cardboard will naturally absorb moisture and deteriorate (crush and sag) especially if used for long-term storage.
Dishes and glassware should be wrapped in paper and packed in study boxes. Stack them on top. Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard or bubble-wrap and marked “FRAGILE”.
Upholstered Furniture, Sofas, Loveseats
Cover stuffed furniture with cardboard or blankets to protect against dust. Avoid placing sharp or heavy objects on top of upholstered furniture.
Place in a protective dust cover. Stand mattresses on their sides and prop them up so that they stand straight.
Metal Items & Tools
Wipe any items made of metal – bikes, metal tables, tools, etc. with machine oil to prevent rusting.
Make sure your personal belongings are covered against damage while in storage. We recommend contacting your insurance agent to inquire or obtain coverage.
